The punctum delens was originally a critical mark that was placed over a character to indicate that it had slipped in by mistake and so needed to be skipped over in the reader's mind or omitted from transcription. In Irish manuscripts, however, it came to be used to indicate lenition of a consonant. This use was initially confined to s and f, but later spread to other characters as well.
