Stowe and Ashburnham collection
Irish and Irish-related manuscripts deriving from the collection founded by George Temple Nugent-Grenville, first marquess of Buckingham (d. 1813), at Stowe House. Many of the Irish manuscripts were collected by Charles O’Conor of Belanagare (d. 1791) and arrived at Stowe after his grandson, Charles O’Conor D.D., became chaplain and librarian to Mary Nugent. He later drew up a catalogue, Bibliotheca Ms. Stowensis (1818-19). The collection still grew when the marquess’s son, first duke of Buckingham and Chandos (d. 1839), inherited it. In 1849, the collection was sold to Bertram Ashburnham, fourth earl of Ashburnham, whose succesor sold it to the British government in 1883. While most of the manuscripts were housed at the British Library, the Irish manuscripts were sent to and deposited in the Royal Irish Academy, initially on loan.
