Punctuation, critical signs and numerals
Punctuation marks are here understood as non-alphabetic symbols without phonemic value that add information about syntax or the organisation of a text. Critical signs can also be described as non-phonemic clues, but they operate at a meta-level by highlighting (or disambiguating) certain features of the written text.
