Textual relationships
The Middle Welsh text is generally considered to be a translation of a Latin original. Angell (1938) drew attention to the Latin texts in Oxford, Balliol College, MS 240 and London, Cotton Cleopatra C x as being closely related. Mittendorf (1999) has argued that in terms of its arrangement of the material, the version in Balliol College is so close to Pen. 14 that it may well have been the exemplar from which the Welsh translator had worked. Cartwright (2008) notes that there is one miracle which does not appear in Pen. 14 and concludes that either another Latin source went into the making of the Welsh text or that the Balliol text was not its direct source.
