Vita Griffini filii Conani ‘The Life of Gruffudd ap Cynan’

  • extent: not extant
The original 12th-century Latin text of the life of Gruffudd ap Cynan, king of Gwynedd. While it was once assumed that no manuscript copy is extant and that the Latin text in Peniarth MS 434E is based on the Middle Welsh translation (Historia Gruffud vab Kenan), Paul Russell has argued that the latter is a redaction of the original Latin text, whose annotations and corrections were intended to align it with the Middle Welsh translation.

Primary sources Text editions and/or modern translations – in whole or in part – along with publications containing additions and corrections, if known. Diplomatic editions, facsimiles and digital image reproductions of the manuscripts are not always listed here but may be found in entries for the relevant manuscripts. For historical purposes, early editions, transcriptions and translations are not excluded, even if their reliability does not meet modern standards.
