The sequence of events according to CS, AT and AFM:

One Gilla Comgáin had stolen treasure from Clonmacnoise (Clúain Moccu Nóis)
The valuables were discovered with (ar or for) the foreigners of Limerick (gaill Luimnig)
Gilla Comgáin fled via Cork (Corcach), Lismore (Les Mór) and Waterford (Port Láirge), where he tried to continue his flight eastwards by ship; however, St Ciarán intervened to hold back, with his staff/crozier (bachall), every ship in which he attempted to leave.

The sequence of events according to CS, AT and AFM (continued):

Conchobor úa Briain, king of Munster (Mumu), handed over the thief [Gilla Comgáin].
Gilla Comgáin testified before his death that he had seen St Ciarán preventing him from setting sail.
He was hanged at:
- CS: Dún Clúana Ithair
- AT: Dún Clúana Íochtair (as edited by Stokes), but recte ‘D. C. Ithair’ (Gwynn, MD).
- AFM: Dún Clúana Bhriain
- The so-called Dublin Annals of Inisfallen have D. C. Iardam.

For the emendation of D. C. Íochtair to D. C. Ithair, see E. J. Gwynn, The metrical dindsenchas, vol. 4 (1924): 452–453. Dún Clúana Bhriain (AFM), which occurs for Dún Clúana Ithair or Dún Clúana Íchtair in CS and AT, is identified by John O'Donovan (ii 1035) as a fort in Cloonbrien, Co. Limerick.
