“The consensus date for the writing of Breudwyt Maxen Wledic is the second half of the twelfth century (or 'late' twelfth century). However, if the author was motivated by particular circumstances or objectives, an appropriate context for the composition of this version of the tale would appear to be the events of 1215-17” (Roberts 2005: lxxxv).
