[EN] Can the gender of a Welsh noun be predicted on the basis either of its ending or of its meaning? The author examines morphological and semantic as well as some phonetic factors, with special reference to the gender of inanimates, and also establishes the numerical proportions of masculine and feminine nouns. Feminines are in a relatively small minority in Welsh, and consequently constitute the marked gender, as in French. The conclusion is that rules can indeed be formulated for the assignment of gender in Welsh.
