ch. 81
Leonaford
Asser was received by the king at his royal vill in Leonaford and spent 8 months with him at his court (in curto mansi). During this time, Asser observes some of the king‘s reading habits: he would read to himself or others would read to him; Asser himself would read aloud to the king from whatever books he (the king) had at hand.

Christmas
During this time, Asser failed to obtain permission to leave and gave up after repeated requests. On Christmas eve, however, he was summoned to the king. Alfred granted to him two monasteries, Congresbury and Banwell (quae Saxonice cognominantur Cungresbyri et Banuwille) after presenting him with two letters (duas epistolas) each of which contained a multiplex supputatio listing the monastery’s moveable properties. Mention is also made of two precious gifts, a silk vestment (pallium) and an onus of incense.
