(c) Eithne

Eithne, wife of Conchobar mac Fachtna, with whom she had a son, Furbaide. An onomastic tale follows according to which a pregnant Eithne drowned in Glais Bearramain, after which it became known as the river Eithne, and her son was born after being cut from the womb. Furbaide is said to be named after the urbad, or cutting (gerrad), and to have been named Diarmait (first).
For (f)urbad, see <DIL s.v. ‘1 furbad , urbad’> as well as <DIL s.v. ‘2 furbad’>. The Rawlinson text specifies that Diarmait was his name first, while the YBL text merely tells that Diarmait was his name. There is a closely related version found in Cóir anmann which is explicit that Furbaide is the name that came first. For discussion, see Donna Wong (1996), who argues that Cóir anmann treats Furbaide/Díarmait and Furbaid Fer Bend as distinct personages.

Why Eochaid Feidlech entrusted his daughters to Conchobar

The explanation given for Eochaid giving his daughters to Conchobar is that Eochaid had done so in compensation (eric) for the fact that he had killed Fachtna Fathach, Conchobar’s father, in the battle of Lettir Ruad, in the Corann. [...]
