14 September: Cóemán Brecc

Note (1) that Cóemán Brecc [mac Nisse – LB] and Mac Rustaing are both from Ros Ech in Caille Fallamain in Mide [R¹, F, LB] and are of the same mother [F, LB]. MSS L and LB note the variant tradition (2) that Cóemán Brecc is in Ros Líac [LB adds, in Latin, ‘as Óengus says, although I do not know where Ros Líac is’]. MSS F and LB: a note in partial support of (1) that here was the grave of Mac Rustaing. No one woman could see it without breaking a rumbling noise (cen maidm a delma eisti) or lofty, foolish laughter (ard-gháire mbáeth); 2 qq cited in support of the location and miraculous nature of the grave.

Ros Ech is now Russagh (Co. Westmeath). Cf. the story of Klefsan in Konungs skuggsjá.

2 qq (ut dixit...) cited: (1) one quatrain saying that Mac Rustaing was known as Crítán, Mac Samáin as Garb Daire, Aindiar as Mac Con Glinne; (2) the other that every woman who sees Mac Rustaing’s grave (lige) in Ros Ech talks, farts (braigid) and laughs aloud.
