A two-volume printed work containing John Bale's extensive chronological catalogue of British and other authors (1557-1559). It builds on his earlier work, Illustrium maioris Britanniae scriptorum ... summarium (1548-1549), which is here significantly expanded and thoroughly revised.

» Comments: I, pp.44-45. Mario Esposito, ‘Bachiarius. Arator. Lathcen’, Journal of Theological Studies 30 (1929) identifies this person with the Irish teacher Macarius whose pupil is said to have argued with Ratramnus of Corbie over the existence of a universal soul (see the latter's Liber de anima ad Odonem Bellovacensem).

Each title is translated from the Latin and if extant identified, with cross-references to STC and other catalogues, locations of manuscript and non-STC works, a general index, STC index, and other indices that make this an indispensable resource for the study of Tudor political and intellectual history, the English Reformation, early English Renaissance literature, and the rise of the printing press and English book culture.
