Description
Abstract (cited)
The study of the genre of the commentary is completely relevant in the context of a study, intermixing editing and textual history, since any commentary involves the representation of two different speeches. The commentary to Philargyrius’ Eclogues of Virgil, in the form of Explanationes corresponds to this issue. Indeed, the commentary is transmitted into two versions of unequal length and presented through continuous scholia with lemmas. Nevertheless, this layout is probably not the only-one-known for this text. These formal aspects of the commentary could not be secondary, and ultimately unimportant if they would not influence at all the text that we can read today. Because beyond the variations of layout, the modern reader is faced with editorial issues related to the reception, reading and teaching practice of the commentary, at different times.
