Description
Abstract (cited)

This chapter discusses the life and career of Margaret Cusack (1829–99), an author and publisher of religious and historical works. Her career provides an insight into the development of the genre of history writing and publishing. Cusack came from an Irish evangelical family of the professional classes. In July 1858 she joined the Catholic Church; she entered the Newry Poor Clare convent in 1859, the Poor Clares being the female counterparts of the Franciscans, and was professed in 1860. Cusack started as a writer of devotional and hagiographical literature, beginning with a life of St Francis. Her first major Irish historical work was The Illustrated History of Ireland (1868).
