[EN] A case of homonymy : the words for "face" and "liver" in the Gaelic dialects.
In some districts, there happened an homonymy between the word for «face », Oir. agad, aiged, Mod. aghaidh, and the word for «liver», ae. Different solutions have been used to avoid the risk of confusion : either the creation of a compound, Ulster cruad-ae «hard liver», or the use of plural, adhae (Ecosse), or the replacement of aghaidh with éadan , which had for its first meaning «forehead» (Connacht). The Munster dialect alone preserved the two words, because the pronoun-ciation of the last consonant in aghaidh prevented any confusion with ae.
