Manuscripts
Seanleabhar seanchais Fhear Manach
This manuscript must remain hypothetical. Seán Mac Gabhráin claims to have drawn on an old manuscript of Fermanagh lore, which is now untraceable if it ever existed. For the possibility of further evidence and for further discussion, see Mac Murchaidh (1990).
pp. 1–29 (section 1)
The text occurs in the first section of the manuscript.
pp. 1–80
Possibly a copy from TCD 1297. Mac Murchaidh has ‘G 137’, but this appears to be an error.
Language
  • Early Modern Irish Modern Irish
Date
“Though ostensibly set at an unspecified date of some antiquity, the language of the tract suggests that it was probably actually written in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. Whether the Maguire tale was entirely a late seventeenth century fabrication or whether it was adapted from earlier versions is not clear, but it is obvious that it reached the form in which it was preserved in the manuscripts of Brian Maguire in his own lifetime”, Bernadette Cunningham • Raymond Gillespie, ‘The purposes of patronage: Brian Maguire of Knockninny and his manuscripts’, Clogher Record 13 (1988): 42.
Form
prose (primary)

Diplomatic editions, facsimiles and digital image reproductions of the manuscripts are not always listed here but may be found in entries for the relevant manuscripts. For historical purposes, early editions, transcriptions and translations are not excluded, even if their reliability does not meet modern standards.
