Description
Abstract (cited)
This collection of essays concerns metrical and grammatical handbooks dating from the Early Irish period to the seventeenth century. These texts are of great importance for our understanding of the history of education and linguistics in medieval and early modern Ireland and are also of significance for a range of other areas of study, including philology, lexicography and poetry. The essays, by leading scholars in the field, present new studies of well-known tracts and bring previously unknown texts to light.

This volume arises from a conference held at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies on 26 September 2014 to mark both the quatercentenary of the death of Giolla Brighde Ó hEódhasa and the recent centenary of the publication by Osborn Bergin of the first part of the Irish Grammatical Tracts. The present volume thus commemorates the contributions of earlier scholars and reflects the progress made in this area over the past hundred years by showcasing some of the latest research in the field.
