An Old Welsh gloss and a Hiberno-Latin text (Collectio Canonum Hibernensis 63.1) refer to pretium benedictionis, a kind of tip which a customer would give to a craftsman when his work is done. This was meant to ensure that the artefact had not been invested with any evil intention on the part of the producer. Accordingly, the craftsman was asked to give the artefact his blessing. This pretium benedictionis corresponds to duilchinne in Old Irish law (cf. Coic conara fuigill, H §89). At a time when magic could be suspected in every craft, such a blessing was used as a sort of exorcism.
